Grietjie is a 2,800 ha game reserve located within the Balule Region of the greater Kruger National park. ||Balule is a member of the APNR (associated Private Nature Reserves) which is made up of Balule, Klaserie, Timbavati and Umbabat and open to the Kruger National Park. There are no fences and game is free to roam between Kruger Park and Grietjie.
The reserve falls under the protected areas act and is now a proclaimed game reserve
Grietjie is located on the Northern banks of the Olifants River. The two other neighbouring reserves on the Northern banks of the Olifants River are Olifants North and Parsons. Grietjie is made up full title 11 to 21 ha farm portions.
There is a network of around 28 km of road that lead to people’s properties that can be utilised for game viewing. A great feature of Grietjie is that there is a communal area along the Olifants whereby land owners can enjoy the views of the river and it’s a great place to go for Sundowners.
Game viewing is very good on Grietjie as the grazing is better than other areas. Many people have water holes and this attracts a lot of game. Game get more relaxed around human activity and as a result tames up and one gets better and more regular sightings.
The security of Grietjie is very good. There are guards at the gate 24 hrs a day and any access into the reserve is controlled. Only home owners, staff and visitors can access the reserve. No day visitors and non-members are allowed to visit the reserve. In addition to gate security there are anti-poaching teams who protect the reserve game including rhino, with the spin off being higher levels of security.
The Reserve is managed by the board of directors who are land owners and voted into the position through the land owners. A warden reports to the Board of Directors and runs the day to day operations, which include, Security, Roads, Antipoaching, game management and conservation matters
Water and Power
Each property gets its water from its own Borehole. This must be drilled, maintained and pumped by each owner. River properties have access to river water. Eskom provides power to most land owners and each owner will have its own direct line form Eskom and has an account with Eskom directly. There is a line fee (fixed fee) for Eskom to maintain the line that must be paid regardless of consumption. Consumption is then billed onto of the fixed line fee.
Grietjie is located off the R40 around 80 km from Hoedspruit and 20 km form Phalaborwa
